THE SPECIES WE PROTECT
At El Palmeral we promote the protection of a great diversity of local flora and fauna species.

Among the flora that we protect is the basaco palm (Dictyocaryum lamarckianum), an important species that provides food for many animals and pollen for thousands of bees. Furthermore, it is the species that gives its name to the project. There are also tree ferns (Cyatheales), a species that has existed for hundreds of millions of years. We conserve countless wild orchids and promote their natural reproduction. Likewise, we protect and promote the restoration of various species of native trees such as the ulcuman (Retrophyllum rospigliosii), strong devil (Podocarpus sp.), walnut (Juglans neotropica), cedar (Cedrela montana), among others.

Among the protected fauna are the Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus), the Gray Woolly Monkey (Lagothrix cana), the Machetero or Pacarana (Dinomys branickii) and a wide variety of birds, including six endemic species of Peru.

The species we protect are in a vulnerable state due to various threats, such as illegal and indiscriminate logging and extraction, illegal hunting of wildlife, fires, urban growth, agriculture, among others.

THE FOREST PLAYS A FUNDAMENTAL ROLE IN THE WATER CYCLE
The relationship that exists between forests and water is essential for life on the planet. Forests are fundamental in the generation of water and are determining factors in the available amount of this vital element, both in the place where they are located and in other places.

Forests act like giant sponges they collect, store and regulate large amounts of rainwater, contributing to the reduction of risks such as floods, landslides of land and droughts.
Forests filter and clean water, helping to maintain high water quality.

At El Palmeral we take into account the role of forests in the water cycle, which is why we do our best to conserve and restore them.
LEARN ABOUT THE FOREST RESTORATION PROJECT
At El Palmeral we have the mission of restoring deforested areas of the forest, returning the native tree species that were eliminated due to indiscriminate logging.
